Twin Stations for Twin Cities
October 20, 2002 Minneapolis, MN
The Twin Cities now have two Catholic radio stations.
Residents of the greater Minneapolis/St. Paul area can now hear Catholic
programming on WMIN, 740 AM, and in Spanish on KSMM, 1530 AM. The announcement
comes after months of work and a unique pairing of two lay apostolates
dedicated to the mission of Catholic radio in the market. A Minneapolis-based
lay apostolate, Twin Hearts Media, has worked diligently for over a
year to raise the funding necessary to purchase a station. After prayer
and much discussion, the group sought the help of Starboard Network,
a Catholic broadcast company based in Green Bay, WI. The pairing was
successful and this summer agreements were signed to operate the stations
under the control of Starboard Network with the intention of raising
the balance of community funds needed to purchase the stations. All
stations owned by Starboard Network are operated on a non-profit basis,
supported by listener donations and non-commercial underwriting rather
than using the for-profit investor return model. Though the stations
will be owned by Starboard, both WMIN and KSMM will remain in the Minneapolis/St.
Paul area to serve both the local community and the Catholic Church.
Starboard plans to develop original programming for the stations in
its network as well as include programs from EWTN, Catholic Answers,
and other Catholic programming outlets. Minneapolis native Jeff Cavins,
Director of Programming for Starboard Network and host of EWTNs
"Life on the Rock", will host a live 2-hour morning show that
will air on all Starboard stations including WMIN starting early next
year.
Cavins says of his flagship morning show, "We aim to answer the
New Evangelization by producing programs that are relevant to todays
listeners. During the morning show we will provide complete news, along
with interviews, teaching and music. The key will be to bring the teachings
of the Church to a people who do not understand the Catholic sub-culture
language. It is our goal to be informative, refreshing, upbeat as we
engage the culture with the good news of Jesus Christ."
In keeping with its mission to provide community Catholic radio, Starboard
Network also plans to make four hours of time available for local programming
on WMIN and KSMM. Committees are being formed to help raise the money
needed to purchase the stations and to help in determining the scope
of local programming.
Twin Hearts Media, who laid the recent foundation for Catholic Radio
in the Twin Cities, has turned this responsibility over to Starboard
Network but will continue its ministry to record Catholic conferences
and distribute Catholic Tapes and CDs in and around the Twin Cities.
Mark Hapka, president of Twin Hearts Media added, "We are thankful
to our dedicated sponsors who have helped us to bring Catholic Radio
back to the Twin Cities starting in August of 2001 with the daily broadcast
of Catholic Answers Live. We strongly encourage everyone to continue
to support Catholic Radio in the Twin Cities by sending their donations
to the Starboard Media Foundation." Twin Hearts Media has promised
to share its list of Catholic radio supporters with Starboard so the
company can keep them up to date on new programs and the latest news
from WMIN and KSMM. If you prefer to keep your name off the list please
notify Twin Hearts Media before November 1st by responding back to this
e-mail or by leaving a voice message at 763-757-4282.
Starboard Media Foundation is a non-profit 501(c)3 corporation and can
be contacted by calling 1-888-774-7968. Donations to support Catholic
radio in the Twin Cities may be mailed to Starboard Media Foundation,
1496 Bellevue St, Building 2, Green Bay, WI 54311. All funds collected
for Catholic radio in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area will be used for
WMIN, 740AM and KSMM, 1530AM
